| Overview Canine Heartworm Disease is a very serious disease that is highly prevalent in Eastern North Carolina. It only takes a single mosquito bite to transmit heartworms from infected dogs to your dog. That means no dog is safe, indoors or out. If you have lived here long, you know that mosquitoes are out even in the dead of winter on warmer days, so the threat is year-round. Fortunately, heartworm disease is preventable. We carry a variety of medications for the prevention of heartworms, all of which are safer and cheaper than having to treat an actual heartworm infection. Tell us a little about your pet and his/her environment, and we can help you choose the heartworm product that is most appropriate for you. Click here for more info on canine heartworms. Feline Heartworm Disease Though not as common as canine heartworm disease, heartworm disease in cats can be much more severe, due to the small size of the cat's heart, and the difficulty in making a positive diagnosis. However, because some cats will show no symptoms for a long time, getting your cat tested is advisable. Prevention is a good idea, as it also prevents some of the other common cat parasites, such as Hookworm and Roundworm infection and depending on the chosen product, also Ear Mites.
